Illustrative situation
A uniform supplier is asked to quote T-shirts for a team that works outdoors. One option is 100% cotton and the other is a 60/40 cotton-polyester blend. The buyer wants to know which suits heavy washing and hot weather.
Main answer
Polyester-cotton blends dry faster, wrinkle less and shrink less than cotton, but they breathe less and can pill, while 100% cotton feels natural and absorbs well but shrinks and wrinkles more. Choose by use, climate, price and care routine, and state the blend ratio on the label.
What a blend changes
Polyester adds strength, quick drying, shape retention and wrinkle resistance. Cotton adds softness, absorbency and a familiar natural feel. A blend balances the two, and the ratio decides the result: more polyester gives more of the synthetic traits. Blends are common in uniforms, workwear and promotional wear.
Comfort
Cotton feels natural and absorbs sweat, but stays damp and slow to dry once wet. A blend dries faster but can feel warmer or clammy to some wearers, as polyester absorbs little water. Comfort also depends on yarn, knit and finish, so test samples in your climate rather than rely on the fibre alone.
Durability and care
Blends usually shrink and wrinkle less and keep their shape through many washes. Pilling can be an issue, as polyester pills hold on to the surface. Cotton shirts shrink and fade more, but pills fall off more easily. Check the heat tolerance of the blend, as high heat can set wrinkles.
Matching to the job
For uniforms washed often in hot machines, a blend usually keeps shape and colour better. For casual wear in warm weather, many customers prefer cotton. For printed promotional items, price and print method often decide, so ask your decorator which fabric they prefer.
Print, price and labelling
Cotton takes many prints and dyes easily. Blends may need special inks or dye processes, and heather effects are common in blends. Prices vary with fabric quality. Labels must list the fibres by generic name and percentage under US textile rules. See T-shirt fit and fabric and custom T-shirt manufacturing.
Fact, recommendation, uncertainty
- Established fact
- US textile rules require fibre content on the label by generic name and percentage, so the blend ratio must be stated.
- Recommendation
- Pick cotton for natural feel and absorbency, a blend for easy care and durability, and test samples in real conditions.
- Uncertainty
- The right ratio depends on the fabric, use and customer, and there is no single best choice.

Sino Finetex Editorial Team Sourcing
Ask for the blend ratio, yarn type and wash test results for each option. Limit: blends vary a lot between mills. Ask whether the heather or melange effect in blends is yarn-dyed or printed.
Sino Finetex Editorial Team Product selection
Match blend ratio to the work, with more polyester for rough use and more cotton for comfort. Limit: heather colours in blends may not match plain cotton. Consider a tri-blend only if you want its softness and accept its price.
Sino Finetex Editorial Team Quality & care
Wash and wear both options for ten cycles and compare shrinkage, pilling and shape. Limit: test with the print or decoration you plan to use. Check that the printed colour looks the same on cotton and blend if you sell both.
